Alaska Native Student Achievement Challenges

Alaska Natives have the lowest college attainment rate and the highest illicit drug use and teen pregnancy rates of any American demographic group. Among the causes are:

  • Historical Trauma: The legacy of forced assimilation policies, such as the boarding school system, has left deep scars. These policies aimed to erase Native cultures and languages, leading to a lasting distrust of educational institutions.

  • Cultural Disconnect: Many Alaska Native students feel a disconnect between their cultural identity and the mainstream education system, which often does not reflect their heritage or values.

  • Poverty: High poverty rates among Alaska Native communities limit access to resources that support educational success, such as tutoring, extracurricular activities, and college preparation programs.

  • Health Issues: Higher rates of health problems, including mental health issues, can affect school attendance and performance.

  • Chronic Absenteeism: Alaska Native students have higher rates of chronic absenteeism, which can be due to various factors including family responsibilities, health issues, and a lack of transportation.

  • Limited Access to Higher Education: Many rural and remote communities have limited access to higher education institutions, making it difficult for students to pursue college degrees.

  • Lack of Support Services: There is often a lack of culturally relevant support services in schools and colleges, which can help Alaska Native students navigate the educational system and feel more connected.

  • Underfunded Schools: Schools serving Alaska Native students are often underfunded, leading to fewer resources, larger class sizes, and less individualized attention.

Addressing these challenges requires a multifaceted approach, including increasing funding for schools, providing culturally relevant support services, and creating pathways to higher education that are accessible and inclusive for Alaska Native students. At ANYEF, we create pathways to higher education.
